Gabriel Schoenfeld joined Commentary magazine in 1994 and is currently its senior editor. Schoenfeld has written for Commentary on a wide range of subjects, including the Vietnam war, terrorism, nuclear proliferation, the cold war, anti-Semitism, and 20th-century German and Russian history. Schoenfeld’s articles have also been published in a number of other leading publications, including the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, the New Republic, the Atlantic Monthly, the National Interest, the New Leader, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, Der Spiegel, and the Asahi Shimbun. He has appeared as a guest commentator on a variety of network news shows, including CBS Nightwatch, ABC’s Nightline, CNN, CBC (Canada) and NHK (Japan). Schoenfeld is also the chess columnist for the New York Sun and the Jerusalem Post.

Prior to joining Commentary, Schoenfeld was a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C., where he founded the research bulletin Soviet Prospects, subsequently renamed Post-Soviet Prospects after the collapse of the Soviet Union. In the 1980’s, Schoenfeld served briefly as a temporary foreign-service officer in the USSR. Schoenfeld earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University’s government department in 1989 and lives in New York.
